THE OLYMPIC GAMES

        The Olympics or the Olympic games began in ancient Greece in 776 B.C. It was an  ancient Greek festival held at  Olympia every four years to honour God Zeus. There were athletic, literary and musical competitions. They were only for Greek men. Women were not allowed to participate in them. There were only few competitions then. In ancient Olympic games the winners were given wreaths of olive leaves.

         Modern Olympic games too are held every four years but in different venues. The first modern Olympic games were held in Athens in 1896. 2004 Olympic games were held in Athens. But Sydney. Australia was the venue of 2000 games. In modern Olympic games many events like  athletics, swimming, soccer, tennis, badminton, boxing, gymnastics and judo are held. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to those who get first, second or third places in any event.
