THE HIPPOPOTAMUS

            The hippopotamus lives in Africa. The Africans call it ‘River Horse’ because it lives in large rivers and lakes. It feed on grass, reeds and other vegetation growing along the riverside. It swims about with its whole body under water. It keeps its eyes and nostrils. above water at all times to breathe and to look around while swimming.

             The Hippopotamus has the biggest mouth among all land animals. Its teeth are very huge. It often weighs more than 220 kilograms. It measures up to 5 feet in height. This mighty animal has a very thick skin. It is so thick that no animal can ever bite through it. Its teeth make good ivory. Belts and whips are made out of its hide. people hunt this huge animal for its delicious flesh, too.
