Ritigala-Ancient Buddhist Monastery and Mountain in Sri Lanka


Ritigala is well known as an ancient Buddhist monastery and mountain in Sri Lanka. It's located 188 kilometers north-east of at Colombo at Ganewalpola. It's near Kekirawa/ Maradankadawala of north-central plains of Sri Lanka. Ritigala is an ancient name. Its true meaning of the name is not yet established. Its rocks inscriptions of the monastery goes back to 1st century BCE. there can be seen many monastic ruins of stones, a stone bridge, circular terraces and terrace ways remains of a gaint stone bank pond built across a water stream. This has historically been called as "Ariththa Pabbatha" means The Mountain Of Ariththa which can be translated as " dreadful Rock" or "Safety  Rock".
