The Well- known Tamil fighter of Ceylonese Freedom Campaign 
Sir Ponnambalam Ramanadan




As a Ceylon Tamil lawyer he was very reputed politician and a leader and fighter for the freedom of Ceylonese. Though he was Tamil servant of society hie remarkable service were spread all over the Ceylonese people who were during that time. Ponnambalam Ramanadan was born on the 16th of April in 1851. He had his early education at Royal College. Then he entered President College in Madras where he studied law. In 1873 he took oaths as a lawyer. He was a lawyer by profession and he was able to become a member of the British law council. In 1879 he was appointed as unofficial member of the legislative  council. He held this position till 1892.  
Though his ethnicity was Tamil he contributed his great effort to protect Buddhist temples too. In 1892 he was appointed solicitor general. He retired in 1903 and in 1904 he was made a king's council. The post office saving's bank was established under his guidance. Now it has grown to be a strong bank under the name National saving's bank.  In 1911 he was elected to the legislative council.  He criticized the harsh way treated to the Sinhalese leaders during the period of martial law in 1915. He remained as a member of  legislative council for thirteen years. He established two schools in the north. He was knighted in 1921. Sir Ponnambalam Ramanadan stepped on to his death on the 27th of November 1930.
